Whether you’re married or have kids – don’t include anything about your personal life on your resume. When it comes to personal details, your name, email, and phone number should be the only things that should be on your resume. You can also include a link to your LinkedIn profile.
- Keep it brief.
Consider your resume as a “highlight reel” of your career. It should portray short snippets of information – about your relevant skills, experience, and accomplishments. Don’t include long, dense text blocks about the job you’ve had 15 years ago in high school. Focus on what’s important and be as concise as possible.
In terms of length, a single-page resume is ideal. However, if you have industry experience of more than 20 years – a two-page resume is acceptable.
- Don’t repeat your cover letter.
The best thing about having a cover letter and resume is that it gives you two opportunities to promote yourself – and impress the potential hiring manager. Repeating the same information on both is a waste of space.
Instead, in your cover letter, describe and tell a story about why you want to work for the company, and why you’re passionate about the industry. On your resume, focus on quantifying your skills, abilities, and accomplishments.
- Avoid extra information.
Unless you’re a fresh graduate, you need not include your GPA or your coursework. Hobbies and other interests are a big NO. If you did volunteer work related to the job vacancy you are applying for, you can include it in the “Volunteer” section.
